Best Smartwatch for Kids in 2020

Best Smartwatches for Kids Illustration

We’re so used to thinking about smartwatches as high-tech devices for tech-savvy adults that most of us don’t stop to think about how these gadgets can be used by kids. I know I was surprised when I found out that there are actually watches specifically designed for use by children, rather than adults or even teenagers.

At first, I was confused. Given that smartwatches are mostly used for fitness tracking, synching to smartphones and for keeping us up to date on alerts and app notifications, I wondered what smartwatches for kids could possibly provide in terms of value. Don’t kids already have enough gadgets to play with between tablets and smartphones?

But I investigated further. And I ended up discovering that smartwatches for kids do have some practical value, in part because of the different focuses that these gadgets have. For example, most kids’ smartwatches emphasize call connectivity, parental control features, and even educational games.

Plenty more have taken the original fitness-tracking focus and made it appropriate for kids’ use – such watches can track a kid’s physical activity to make sure they’re getting all the exercise they need.

All this is to say that there are such things as the best smartwatches for kids. So, naturally, I had to find them! What you see below is the final result of weeks of research, but it was well worth it if I can help even one parent find the perfect smartwatch for their child. Let’s dive in.

Best Kids Smartwatches of 2020

1. Gizmo Watch 2 – Best Overall Smartwatch for Kids

Bluetooth Connectivity: No | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes, high quality | Sizes: N/A  | Band Sizes: N/A | Display: 1.4” | Weight: 1.94 oz  | Colors: Blue, Pink | Battery Life: 4 days | Heart Rate Monitor: No | Connectivity: 4G LTE | Mobile Payments: No | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: No | Sleep Tracking: No | Charging: USB cable | OS: N/A | Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2500 32-bit, Quad-core 1.2GHz | Onboard Storage: 4GB
GizmoWatch 2

When it comes to smartwatches for kids, I have to start here. The Gizmo Watch 2 can be hard to find, but that’s only because it’s a unique watch specifically designed for use with Verizon phones. In addition to this emphasis, the watch’s creators designed it with kid safety in mind – I found lots of features that reinforced this fact as I checked it out.

For instance, this Verizon kids’ watch comes with some of the best GPS functions I’ve seen with a smartwatch, including real-time location tracking and so-called geo-fencing: this essentially helps the smartwatch remain accurate by pinpointing its signal using nearby geolocation fences or borders. It’s incredibly easy for parents to track the watch (and thus, the wearer) location using a smartphone. The proprietary GizmoHub app works like a charm with any Verizon-origin phone.

There are plenty of other features to make it worth your while, including call-focused options such as quick dial and automatic answer. This can help parents keep in touch with their children without requiring them to memorize how to use a complex digital watch’s controls. The included automatic answering feature, for another example, makes it so that calls will automatically go through. Quick dial helps kids make phone calls quickly and easily by pressing a hard key button for five seconds.

In total, the GizmoWatch 2 is a perfect child’s device. Kids can stay in contact with up to 10 trusted contacts at once. This does, of course, tie in perfectly with Verizon mobile networks – but this also means that it might be a great choice if you already use Verizon for your cellular needs.

There are other mobile aspects as well, like a full fitness tracker to help kids count their steps and remain active. Parents can take a more active role in their child’s fitness as well by setting reminders and setting scheduled alerts to keep their kids up and in motion. Additional scheduling features, like task reminders or alarms to brush teeth or go to bed, make this a perfect companion device in many ways.

All in all, the GizmoWatch is a very “hands-on” smartwatch for kids. It’s waterproof and features a rubber wristband that comes in blue by default, but you can also get it in pink. The only real downside is the lack of playful features (even though you can download some games). Still, it’s a great Verizon smartwatch for kids whose parents want to keep track of them as accurately as possible.

Pros
  • It’s arguably the best smartwatch for kids’ safety due to the hands-on features relating to parental controls and GPS tracking
  • Built to last with waterproof functionality and a durable rubber wristband
  • Allows easy calls without the child needing to press multiple buttons at a time
  • Offers fantastic real-time GPS tracking
  • The watch functions as an alarm clock where parents and kids can set reminders and alarms for daily tasks or meetups
Cons
  • Not the best kids’ gaming watch – kids may find this watch to be less than entertaining

2. Kurio 2.0 – Best Value Smartwatch for Kids

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: No | Weatherproof: No | GPS: No | Sizes: N/A  | Band Sizes: N/A | Display: 1.54”| Weight: 0.96oz  | Colors: Lavender, Blue, Pink | Battery Life: 2-24 hours | Heart Rate Monitor: No | Connectivity: Bluetooth | Mobile Payments: No | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: No | Sleep Tracking: No | Charging: Micro USB slot | OS: Proprietary | Processor: N/A | Onboard Storage: 256MB
Kurio 2.0

The Kurio 2.0 is another fantastic smartwatch for kids, and it’s quite affordable when you consider the sheer value and number of features packed into its software and hardware. I personally found this watch to have the largest variety of features, compared to competing smartwatches, so parents who want to give their kids something functional and fun at the same time may find a lot to like here.

For instance, the Kurio 2.0 comes with camera, video, and voice recorder functionality. Kids can easily use the watch to take pictures and record video, as well as enjoy a simplified customization software suite to change the pictures before sending them to their friends or family. This does make the watch a little more advanced for younger kids – those in the 8-12 age range will probably get the most use out of this compared to younger kids.

Other features boost the watch’s value even further. For instance, wearers can message other Kurio-brand watches using Bluetooth technology. But the watch can also send messages to any Android device. This is actually something of a limitation since you won’t be able to send texts or other messages to iOS devices.

But the Kurio 2.0 comes with other interesting features as well, including tons of fun apps and games. Some of these are two-player games, though the small screen realistically makes these a little janky to play in practice. However, parents interested in providing their kids with an entertaining smartwatch will be pleased that their kids can play with others instead of by themselves. There are also several motion detection games – these can be helpful for getting your kid up and moving instead of sitting on the couch staring at yet another screen.

Of course, the Kurio 2.0 features all the staple stuff you’d expect in an adult smartwatch, like phone calls, step tracking, music playing, and a calendar. All of these work well on the Android OS, which is intuitive and relatively simplistic to use: a perfect fit for kids.

Speaking of fit, the watch comes with tons of interchangeable straps that come in different colors. This gives you the chance to let your kid customize the watch according to their personality. Or you can choose the special thermal strap which changes color based on the heat of the wearer’s wrist.

All in all, the Kurio 2.0 offers a ton of value for the money, in exchange for a few limitations regarding messaging compatibility. In my opinion, kids and parents alike will find this to be a good pick if they want a watch that does it all without a particularly narrow focus.

Pros
  • Comes with tons of features and functions despite being relatively affordable
  • Allows kids to play single-player or two-player games
  • Has all the main features of a smartwatch, like phone call functionality, step tracking, and more
  • Can be bought with interchangeable wristbands so that kids can customize the watch
  • Has a special messaging app for other Kurio-brand smartwatches
  • Also comes with camera and video recording functionality, as well as limited picture customization on the watch
Cons
  • Only messages and connects to Android devices

3. Amazfit Bip Smartwatch – Best Smartwatch for Teenagers

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes | Sizes: N/A  | Band Sizes: 20mm | Display: 1.28” | Weight: 1.1 oz | Colors: Onyx Black, White Cloud, Kokoda Green, Cinnabar Red | Battery Life: 45 days | Heart Rate Monitor: Yes | Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.0/BLE | Mobile Payments: No | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: Clip/2-pins POGO pin | OS: Amazfit | Processor: Mediatek | Onboard Storage: 64 MB
Amazfit Bip

There are smartwatches for smaller children, and then there are smartwatches for older kids on the cusp of their teenage years or who want something a little more mature without being quite as advanced or complex as an “adult” smartwatch. That’s where the Amazfit Bip comes in. This simple but effective smartwatch blurs the line between being kid-friendly and relatively simplistic, versus being suitable for adult use.

For instance, it comes in black by default, offering a minimalist aesthetic in exchange for extra features and a relatively durable synth-rubber wristband that can last for quite a long time. Other colors are offered as well, like teal and pink.

But the real focus of this watch reveals itself when you dive into the details. For instance, it includes features like a heart rate monitor and built-in GPS. This allows the wearer to track their steps in real-time, see how many calories they burn, and even monitor their sleep. Additional sports tracking features are available as well, marking this as more of a fitness-focused smartwatch for kids and teenagers than most of the others on this list.

The watch comes with additional cornerstone features as well, like the ability to make or receive calls, make or receive messages and even receive app notifications when paired to an appropriate smart device or phone. Notably, this watch can link with social media apps – no doubt this is a key concern for teenagers looking to stay in their social loops.

The watch overall is relatively lightweight and comfortable, as it only weighs about 32 g. Even with this light weight, the watch boasts a 45-day battery life due to the lithium polymer battery. Charge it for up to 2.5 hours and you’ll be able to enjoy the watch for over a month. In my view, this is another big point toward this being a great smartwatch for teenagers, who are likely to leave the devices lying around and forget to charge them frequently.

The downsides? The watch is relatively cheap, which rears its ugly head in terms of durability. While the watch is waterproof to some extent, it’s not nearly as tough as many of the other adult smartwatches you can find on the market. The screen also isn’t very customizable, which could be a downside for your teenager depending on their personality.

But there’s still no denying that this is one of the best smartwatches for teens due to its affordability, flexibility, and focus on more mature functions and features compared to games and colorful displays.

Pros
  • A perfect choice for teenagers due to its more mature and fitness-focused features
  • Includes the ability to link to social media apps
  • Can make phone calls and send messages
  • Very affordable, even compared to other top smartwatches on the market
  • Has a fantastic battery life even after only charging for a few hours
Cons
  • The interface can’t be customized very much
  • Not as durable as many other smartwatches on the market

4. Leapfrog Leapband Activity Tracker – Best Smartwatch for Toddlers and Parental Control

Bluetooth Connectivity: No | Accepts Calls: No | Weatherproof: No | GPS: No | Sizes: N/A  | Band Sizes: N/A | Display: 1.2” | Weight: 5.6 oz | Colors: Blue, Green, Orange, Pink | Battery Life: 18-24 hours | Heart Rate Monitor: No | Connectivity: N/A | Mobile Payments: No | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: No | Sleep Tracking: No | Charging: N/A | OS: N/A | Processor: N/A | Onboard Storage: 64 MB
Leapfrog Leapband Activity Tracker

Allow me to bring us back to something much more distinctly kid-focused, especially for younger kids. The LeapFrog LeapBand is a distinctly “kiddie” smartwatch, and that’s easy to tell right from the get-go due to the colorful and childish aesthetic. But this focus is also reflected in the price – I don’t honestly know if you can find a cheaper smartwatch.

Then again, calling this a smartwatch at all is a bit of a stretch. Even the official name for the watch mentions “activity tracker” and that’s the best way to think of the LeapBand – as an activity tracking device. It doesn’t come with many of the staple smartwatch features or functions that you would expect, like the ability to make phone calls or send messages.

Instead, this kids activity watch is almost exclusively designed for getting your kids up and moving. It can track their activities in a game-like interface. Kids can pick between 8 different pets that can be animated on the colorful screen. These range from things like dragons to robots to unicorns, and kids can even name and colorize the digital animals if they like.

Parents can then use the built-in Connect function and set up to 36 distinct challenges. These are named according to the animals that demonstrate the activity – for instance, one of the challenges is called “Jump like a frog,” and it’s designed to get your kids jumping up and down to burn calories and keep them moving so they aren’t still awake at bedtime.

Once you check out the available exercises, you’ll notice that’s the end of the LeapBand’s features. It’s an extremely simplistic device and comes with a plastic wristband that only kids would find acceptable. I’d definitely only recommend this toddler smartwatch for kids young enough to enjoy using the device as they run around and roughhouse. Any kids older than 5 or so are likely to leave it lying around or deem it too kiddie for their liking.

Pros
  • The smartwatch is super easy to use and enjoy for both parents and adults, in part because it only has a few buttons
  • Parents can set up to 36 different exercise challenges using the interface
  • The tracker can check on kids’ activity levels and show them how to do different exercises through the colorful screen
  • Kids will be entertained by coloring and naming the animals included with the LeapBand
Cons
  • Very kiddie – it’s basically a kids’ interactive watch more than anything else. The included features are extremely limited and kids will quickly grow out of appreciating this device
  • The wristband is made of plastic, so it’s not very comfortable on a child’s wrist and they may take it off relatively frequently

5. Vtech Kidizoom DX2 – Best Kids Smartwatch for Games

Bluetooth Connectivity: No | Accepts Calls: N/A | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: No | Sizes: N/A  | Band Sizes: N/A | Display: 1.44”| Weight: 6.24 oz | Colors: Blue, Green, White, Pink | Battery Life: 2 to 3 days | Heart Rate Monitor: No | Connectivity: N/A | Mobile Payments: No | Compatibility: MacOS X 10.9, Windows 7 | Automatic Workout Tracking: No | Sleep Tracking: No | Charging: Micro-USB Cable | OS: N/A | Processor: Proprietary | Onboard Storage: 256MB
Vtech Kidizoom DX2

The Kidizoom DX2 comes in pink by default, but don’t let that fool you – it also comes in colors like blue and black and it’s a perfect choice for both boys and girls interested in playing games on a smartwatch device. The watch is, in fact, designed to be taken anywhere and keep your kids entertained while you do shopping or handle adult business. For instance, it’s made with a splash-proof rubber wristband that’s easy to adjust and that can grow with your kids.

The Vtech Kidizoom smartwatch is also waterproof and durable by default. The battery is easy to recharge using a micro USB cable, and the screen is relatively large compared to many other smartwatches (which is a good thing for kids that don’t have the dexterity to handle smaller screens).

But the DX2 really shows its value in the plethora of games included in its software – it’s honestly one of the best watches that you can play games on, bar none (and that includes for adults!).

For instance, it includes an augmented reality game that allows kids to try to capture monsters in the real world, like in the popular smartphone game Pokemon Go. There are other, more educational games included as well, making this a potentially good choice for kids about to enter school.

For example, one game teaches kids about time management, helping them to design custom watch faces with timed challenges. Additional learning games and brainteasers are included so your kids will be entertained and educated while on a long car ride. Since most of the games involve outdoor play or activity instead of sitting around, parents concerned about their kids’ fitness will be pleased here as well.

But that’s not all. The DX2 Kidizoom watch also includes dual cameras. Kids can easily capture videos or pictures using the smartwatch, then add creative effects right from the same screen. It’s actually a decent watch for this factor alone, in my eyes, though kids are more likely to enjoy the games than the cameras on average.

Also interesting is the fact that this kids’ game watch includes parental game controls and even time limits. Plus, it can’t connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth so all the watch’s content is totally secure. This does limit the watch’s functionality to some extent, as it can’t be used to send messages or call your child. But that only reinforces the watch’s focus on activity and outdoor play. Definitely give it a shot if your kid (or you) wants a smartwatch with that emphasis above all else.

Pros
  • Designed for games and activity above other factors, and it includes plenty of outdoor-focused games to get your child moving
  • Includes two cameras to let kids take pictures and video, plus software to add FX afterward
  • Many of the games are educational in nature
  • The watch is relatively durable and suitable for outdoor play
  • No Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity to distract your kids
Cons
  • The watch is definitely more limited because of the lack of connectivity to wireless devices

6. Prograce Kids Smartwatch – Best Kids Smartwatch for Girls

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: No | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: No | Sizes: N/A  | Band Sizes: N/A | Display: 1.54” | Weight: 1.62 oz | Colors: Blue, Pink | Battery Life: 1 day | Heart Rate Monitor: No | Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB | Mobile Payments: No | Compatibility: N/A | Automatic Workout Tracking: No | Sleep Tracking: No | Charging: N/A | OS: N/A | Processor: N/A | Onboard Storage: Nil
Prograce Kids Smartwatch

So far, all of the kids’ smartwatches I’ve looked at have been either good for both boys and girls, and some of them have even had a slight lean toward the masculine side of things with colors like blue and black for the watch face borders and wristbands. With the pink and light blue bands, they might be closing themselves off from a broader market – but this watch does have some great features, and might be the perfect match for your kid!

For starters, the watch features a 90° rotatable camera and it‘s actually a pretty good camera overall in terms of quality and ease-of-use. The only downside is that you have to insert a 1 GB to 32 GB microSD card if you want to use the camera and such a card isn’t included by default.

But this kids’ camera watch has other beneficial aspects and features your kids are likely to love, including four built-in games that can entertain them while on the road or while you do some shopping. These are all played with an intuitive touchscreen interface. The watch overall is mostly targeted toward younger children, in part because the watch is durable and has a wide screen for their relatively clumsy finger presses.

The watch also includes a fitness tracker that you can use to make sure your kids don’t spend all day sitting down. It also includes a plethora of other enjoyable features, like a flashlight and earphone support, so your kid can listen to music (installed on the microSD card you’ll, which unfortunately isn’t included).

And yes, there’s no getting around that the watch comes in pink by default. Even the alternative blue color is relatively light and feminine compared to a darker shade. The battery, unfortunately, usually only lasts for up to a day or so, so you’ll need to be sure to constantly recharge the device if you want your kids to enjoy it as often as I expect they’ll like.

All in all, the Prograce offers a lot of value and is a particularly good choice for young girls who want an intuitive device that focuses on taking pictures and playing games over other features and functions.

Pros
  • Comes in two colors ideal for girls
  • Comes with an adjustable camera that can be used to take photos and videos, and the camera quality is decent
  • Also includes a selection of games designed to get your kids up and running
  • Has some other features, like a flashlight and a fitness tracker, so you can see how your kid is doing in terms of daily activity
Cons
  • The battery life could be a little better as it’s usually only around one day from full to empty
  • The watch doesn’t have any monitoring or GPS related features, so it’s relatively limited
  • Need to supply microSD cards to take advantage of some features

7. Garmin Vivofit Jr 2 – Best Battery Smartwatch for Kids

Bluetooth Connectivity: No | Accepts Calls: No | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: No | Sizes: N/A  | Band Sizes: N/A | Display: 0.7” | Weight: 0.64 oz | Colors: Blue, Red, Yellow/Orange | Battery Life: Up to 1 year | Heart Rate Monitor: No | Connectivity: N/A | Mobile Payments: No | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: N/A | OS: N/A | Processor: N/A | Onboard Storage: N/A
Garmin Vivofit Jr 2

Earlier, I pointed out a smartwatch that had a battery life of over a month. But the Garmin Vivofit Jr blows that out of the water. In total, the smartwatch can last for up to one year without any recharging whatsoever. Of course, this is mostly because it has a simplistic black and white screen and it’s not a very versatile device whatsoever. But the long battery life and simplicity could be attractive depending on your goals and what you want your kid to wear when you’re away.

This basic smartwatch is really easy for kids to put on. It only comes in a single size, but that size is designed to fit most kids’ wrists. The one-piece band also makes sure that the watch is difficult to damage, even with heavy use. Add to that a relatively small screen, and you get an overall tough smartwatch, even if your kid wears it all day while roughhousing. It’s also swim-friendly and offers decent water resistance.

The watch comes with a compatible parent mobile app. This allows you to activate different educational mobile games and small digital shows on the watch. Many of these activities are derivatives of standard smartwatch features like a step tracker, a sleep tracker, and recommendations for daily activities. Other games are a little more unique, including a chore management tool and a mobile adventure trail that kids can follow to get them moving outside.

I found one game in particular that was interesting – it had the “kid” (in this case, I was playing the kid) earn coins for doing certain chores that could then be redeemed for certain rewards agreed upon by the parent. The digital display that all these activities are showcased on is super small and only in black and white, however, so some kids may get a little bored with the watch compared to the more colorful devices you can find elsewhere on the market.

Still, I think this is a decent choice overall for parents who want to get their kid a smartwatch device of some flexibility without splurging or getting them another colorful screen for them to feast their eyes upon for hours on end. Plus, it’s a good transitioning smartwatch that can potentially teach your child some responsibility. If your kid uses this, they might be ready and excited to switch to a more advanced watch when they get older.

Pros
  • Has a single small screen in black and white, and thus benefits from a one-year battery life on average
  • Made with a durable silicone wristband that fits most wrists pretty easily
  • Can be programmed with chore-related games and activities
  • Includes some fitness-focused functions as well to keep your kid active and moving
  • Relatively affordable overall
Cons
  • Doesn’t have as many complex features or games as other smartwatches on the market, so your kid might become bored over time

8. TickTalk 3 – Best Smartwatch for Kids Making Calls

Bluetooth Connectivity: No | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes | Sizes: N/A  | Band Sizes: ~23mm | Display: 1.22” | Weight: 3.2 oz | Colors: Red, Black | Battery Life: 1.5 Days | Heart Rate Monitor: No | Connectivity: 4G LTE | Mobile Payments: No | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: No | Sleep Tracking: No | Charging: Charging cable | OS: N/A | Processor: N/A | Onboard Storage: 160MB
TickTalk 3

Some parents will undoubtedly want a smartwatch that allows them to stay in contact with their kids as much as possible. If that’s you, then I’d recommend the TickTalk 3. As the name of the smartwatch suggests, this device emphasizes messaging and phone calls above other features, although it has many of those as well. It’s one of the more advanced kids’ smartwatches you can find and it’s ultimately pretty close to the more modern and mature smartwatch that you’d see on the wrists of adults and teenagers.

Let me break it down. The TickTalk 3 features a face talk, or two-way video calling, feature that allows you to video call your kid anytime and anywhere. The video footage is displayed in 800 x 480 dpi resolution, which is pretty good considering the size of the screen. You can either use cellular data or Wi-Fi connectivity to save on your monthly bill – parents concerned with their budget will appreciate this aspect.

The Wi-Fi watch also comes with an instant message app that allows you to send two-way text or voice messages, along with photos and emojis. Plus, kids can program preset text messages – this allows even younger kids to make use of the smartwatch if they aren’t quite good enough with spelling to write complicated messages by themselves.

Even better, parents will appreciate that the smartwatch is compatible with 4G reception and features a GPS tracker. Parents can track the watch in real-time so they can make sure that their kid gets to school on time or doesn’t go anywhere they aren’t supposed to.

This GPS smartwatch is durable, too, featuring a water-resistant design and a replaceable band so that kids and parents can customize the watch a little bit depending on their preferences.

One big thing I’ll point out is the need to choose the watch specifically for the network you plan to utilize. That’s because the SIM card loaded into the smartwatch has to be determined beforehand. The TickTalk 3 comes with SIM cards for AT&T, T-Mobile, or a custom option (called “use your own carrier”).

All in all, it’s a fantastic watch for parent to child connectivity and making calls, while boasting additional features and flexibility as well.

Pros
  • Offers two-way voice calls and text messaging with decent connectivity all around
  • The video calls benefit from decent resolution despite the small screen
  • The watch is easy to use for kids, especially since they can send premade text messages instead of having to write their own
  • Made to be fairly durable overall
  • Features interchangeable wristbands
Cons
  • It’s easy to accidentally choose the wrong watch and SIM card for your needs

9. Fitbit Ace 2 – Best Fitness Smartwatch for Kids

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: No | Sizes: N/A  | Band Sizes: N/A | Display: 0.8” | Weight: 1.28 oz | Colors: Night Sky/Neon Yellow, Watermelon/Teal, Grape  | Battery Life: Up to 5 days | Heart Rate Monitor: No | Connectivity: Bluetooth | Mobile Payments: No | Compatibility: Android, iOS, Windows | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: Magnetic charging cable | OS: Proprietary | Processor: Fitbit | Onboard Storage: N/A
Fitbit Ace 2

Many adult-oriented smartwatches are focused on fitness features above all else. This kids’ smartwatch also prioritizes fitness functionality, so it’s a potentially good choice if you have an older kid and they want to start working out or tracking things like calories and steps walked on their own. But you might also seriously consider this watch if your kid is younger and you want to make sure they get enough activity every day.

As I examined the Fitbit Ace 2, I found that it tracks things like steps and active minutes, which also tracks things like skipping, jumping, and other roughhousing that kids are more likely to do than adults. You can easily tell that this is a kids’ watch due to the colorful screen and included rewards. As they move and meet activity goals, kids will earn virtual badges and receive fun on-screen messages to keep them motivated and competing with their friends.

Plus, it’s a fairly durable watch through and through. It’s waterproof down to 50 m or so and it comes with up to five days of battery life, so it’s good for kids who don’t remember to plug in their mobile devices very frequently. I also found that you can link this smartwatch to a special “child’s” account to limit their access to certain features – this may be a good choice if you want to make sure that your kid isn’t exposed to too many digital risks.

There are other fitness-focused features and apps as well, like a sleep tracking function and a bedtime and sedentary reminder as well as silent alarms. All of this is packaged into a silicone watch face and wristband that can be chosen in either blue or watermelon colors. The aesthetic alone marks this as a kind of pre-adult Fitbit variant. In other words, if you already have a Fitbit for your own fitness goals, this is a great pick for a kid that looks up to you and wants to emulate your lifestyle and activity levels.

Pros
  • A good kids’ fit watch since it has a great motion sensor that tracks child movements and activities, and even more complicated motions like skipping and jumping
  • Has a handful of fitness-related apps, such as a sleep tracker, to help kids take charge of their own health
  • Made with a durable silicone watch face and band that’s also waterproof
  • Parents can “pair” to the Fitbit Ace and make sure their kid can’t access things that they shouldn’t
  • Has decent battery life overall
Cons
  • Limited connectivity, and sync range for some tracking features is only 6 m: far too low for many kids’ activity habits/li>

10. LG GizmoPal 2 – Best Kids Smartwatch with GPS

Bluetooth Connectivity: No | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes | Sizes: N/A  | Band Sizes: N/A | Display: 0.8” | Weight: 1.48 oz | Colors: Pink, Blue  | Battery Life: 2.5 hours | Heart Rate Monitor: No | Connectivity: N/A | Mobile Payments: No | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: No | Sleep Tracking: No | Charging: Micro USB | OS: N/A | Processor: N/A | Onboard Storage: N/A
LG Gizmo Pal 2

Last but certainly not least is the LG GizmoPal 2: a great smartwatch if you want to emphasize GPS connectivity and simplicity above other features.

Right off the bat, you’ll notice the unique design of the watch face, which doesn’t come with an LED or other type of screen but instead has a simple phone call button and a microphone/speaker directly above. It’s basically a kids wrist phone instead of a smartwatch.

The lack of a screen is certainly a big selling point for parents who don’t want their kids to constantly stare at another screen on their wrist when they already have access to computers and tablets.

The simplicity of the watch’s design is another big plus if you plan to give this to a younger kid who might have trouble using more complex devices. The GizmoPal can be paired to a single phone (such as the parent’s), or two caregivers or up to four phone numbers can be programmed into the watch in total. Additionally, the GizmoPal will automatically answer any incoming call after 10 seconds so that kids can always be in contact with their parents, even in noisy environments.

More importantly, all of this is handled through the proprietary app that a parent can install on their smartphone. It’s through the app that they can also use the GPS real-time location tracking feature. This gives you regular alerts of your child’s location, or you can set the app to ping you with their location at certain time intervals. It provides even more detailed information as well, like tags and name places superimposed over a map so you know exactly where they’ve gone and where they’re going.

The GizmoPal only comes in blue and is water-resistant, and the wristband is easy to secure and fit over a kid’s wrist. The battery life hovers around five days on average if you call your kid regularly, but it goes down if you use some of the other features, like LED battery level notifications and regular time alerts.

But all in all, the GizmoPal is the best child GPS watch I saw, and a perfect parent-friendly smartwatch for kids for those caregivers that want to constantly keep an eye on their little ones. The simplicity of the watch means that you’ll likely have to switch it out for a more advanced watch once they get a little older, but it’s a fantastic pick for its focus and purpose. Some devices are better off being more specialized!

Pros
  • Doesn’t have an LED screen – instead, it has a single button and speaker so your kid can’t be confused by the watch
  • Very easy to use and program multiple numbers into the watch
  • Can be used with a proprietary app that lets you track your kid’s location and that provides lots of location-relevant information
  • Has a decent battery life overall
  • Will automatically answer incoming calls in case your kid forgets to answer instead
Cons
  • Very limited functionality and will likely only be useful for a couple of years

Final Verdict

There were tons of good options that I found during my research. But even though the Kurio 2.0 is only compatible with Android devices, I still found it to be my favorite kids’ smartwatch out of the bunch. Granted, I don’t have kids. But if I did, I’d certainly consider picking this up for them due to the sheer variety of its features. This watch does it all: makes calls, sends messages, and includes games for kids’ entertainment.

But remember – my opinion is just that. The GizmoWatch 2 is probably a better overall smartwatch for kids for most parents, and in particular those who want extra parental controls and monitoring capabilities. Regardless, be sure to go over each review again and remember what I talk about in the buying guide. That’s the best way to make sure you get the ideal kids’ smartwatch for your child, specifically. What’s this? A guide on the best kids smartwatches written by a grown man? How can I know what I’m talking about?

Methodology

Full disclosure: I don’t have kids. But I do know tons of people who do have kids of their own, and since I wanted to round out my collection of guides to top-tier smartwatches for different needs or kinds of people with a kids’ smartwatch review, I got out my notebook and started interrogating.

Well, it wasn’t that intense. But I did ask a ton of in-depth questions about what parents looked for in kids’ smartwatches, what their experiences were with the smartwatches described above, and so on. I even had several people bring me some of their kiddos’ to the office so I could check out their watches and evaluate them in person.

In the end, I gathered enough information that I felt I could make concrete judgments on the watches above. I bolstered my own experience and the reviews I got in person with plenty of extra reviews from folks online as well. Ultimately, I’m confident that each watch review has enough actual information to be helpful for most folks.

Buyer’s Guide

How can you tell which smartwatch is the perfect pick for your kid and your needs as a parent? There are multiple factors to consider – this buying guide will break down what those are.

Smartwatch Focus and Features

Smartwatch GPS

I’d first recommend that you focus on smartwatch features and the emphasis that the device has. For instance, some smartwatches will emphasize games and entertainment, making them good choices if you want your kid to mostly use the smartwatch while they are in the car or waiting for a dentist appointment or something similar.

Other smartwatches might be designed for phone call connectivity and text messaging. These are great picks for parents who want to constantly stay in contact with their kids and always be able to reach them through phone call or text message.

The features usually point pretty clearly to the focus of the smartwatch. For instance, the GizmoWatch 2 includes lots of GPS and location tracking features that help to show parents what the watch is about and what its primary purpose is meant to be.

I’d recommend taking a deep look at the full features of any given smartwatch. Don’t assume that every smartwatch can make phone calls, like the vast majority of adult smartwatches on the market. Some kids smartwatches are even more focused or specialized than their adult counterparts.

Does It Have a Camera?

I’d specifically recommend checking to see if your favorite is a kids’ smart watch with a camera. This feature has a pretty big impact on a watch’s battery life and focus — especially watches with a dual camera — and cameras are really only appropriate for certain kids with the right maturity to use the feature correctly. Keep in mind that many cameras need SIM cards to be inserted for the pictures to be saved.

Can It Play Games?

You’ll also want to double-check and see whether a smartwatch allows kids to play games. Many parents are understandably concerned about how much time the kids spend staring at screens. Games can be educational and even inspire physical activity, but some games can also be somewhat addictive. It’s up to you to decide whether you want to get your kid a smartwatch with tons of entertaining games or if you want the watch to be more simplistic or focused on fitness.

Can the Smartwatch Make Calls?

Phone Call Quality

Perhaps the most important feature of all is whether or not the smartwatch can make phone calls to you. Since some parents are more focused on finding a wrist phone for their kids, I also decided to make it a focus during my research.

That’s because call functionality holds more stakes for children than it does for adults. More kids’ cell phone watches have limitations placed on who the kid can call and who can call them, and they may also include features like automatic call acceptance. This is good for smartwatches paired to parent phones – this way, parents can always get in contact with their kids even if the child in question doesn’t remember how to accept the call manually.

But this can also be a little dangerous if your kid doesn’t know good call etiquette or protocol. Many parents will want to stay away from child cell phone watches that give their little ones the ability to make calls, and potentially receive them from intrusive adults, for their own safety. Bottom line: check to see whether call functionality is included before making a purchase so you know exactly what comes with the device.

Colors and Aesthetics

It’s also a good idea to consider the colors and aesthetics of a given child smartwatch. Kids can be pretty picky about the devices and accessories they play with, so it may be worthwhile to see the colors of watch faces and wristbands available before going through with the purchase.

The good news is that many smartwatches for kids have interchangeable wristbands to allow for limited exterior customization. You might be able to find a smartwatch with your kid’s favorite color with a little research or hunting.

Most kids’ smartwatches are also designed for durability, however, so the watch faces and wristbands are almost universally made of silicone instead of metal or other materials. Furthermore, most of their digital faces can’t be customized to the same extent as an adult smartwatch.

What Age Is the Smartwatch Best For?

One last thing to consider is the age range that a given smartwatch is appropriate for. This is more important than you might initially think – kids are really sensitive to devices or accessories that make them seem younger than they actually are. They might outright refuse to use a smartwatch that seems too “kiddie” for them.

I’ve included age ranges above for the ages I think each smartwatch is appropriate for. For instance, smartwatches for 4-year-old kids to 6-year-old kids or so will be blockier, more colorful, and have more simplistic buttons or interfaces. They may also have the fewest features among all kid smartwatches.

Smartwatches for 6-year- old kids to 10-year-old kids or so will be a little more advanced and may even have more color options. These are the first smartwatches to have games and more complex features, like cameras and other functions. Smartwatches for these ages and above usually come with an SOS feature, often an SOS button, where the wearer can reach emergency contacts easily if they find themselves in need of help.

Meanwhile, there are some smartwatches for 12 year old kids to 15 year old kids or so. These are more teenager oriented, so they’re likely to seem more mature in terms of aesthetics and may even have more staple or standard smartwatch features that you’d expect to see with a regular device, like fitness tracking and sleep monitor.

FAQs

Q: What makes a smartwatch good for kids?

A: In truth, there isn’t a whole lot different between regular smartwatches and smartwatches designed for children. The biggest change lies in the focus – adult smartwatches emphasize fitness tracking and connectivity to other mobile devices for app notifications and the like. Kids’ smartwatches are more focused on connectivity to parents and games.

In truth, a good smartwatch for your kid should emphasize those features they find most interesting or useful, or a smartwatch that can give you the parental controls and monitoring capabilities yoo deem to be most important.

Q: Do kids’ smartwatches work with any device type?

A: No. Some smartwatches for kids are designed only for use with Android devices, while others can be used with Android or iOS phones or tablets. Be sure to check which devices a given smartwatch is compatible with before making a purchase so you don’t accidentally waste your money.

Keep in mind that most smartwatches can only work with relatively up-to-date software for both OS types, as well.

Q: How do you know when your kid is ready for a smartwatch?

A: In my opinion, touch screen watches for kids are never necessary. Instead, smartwatches should be used as solutions for specific issues. Say that your kid has to go to school some ways away from home and you want to be able to track them at the end of every school day. A smartwatch is a great way to keep tabs on your son or daughter without constantly calling them during the workday.

In most cases, kids’ smartwatches are designed to be relatively simple and easy to use. A few, like the GizmoPal, are specifically designed with as few buttons as possible to prevent any mishaps or confusion.

All in all, kids are really only ready for smartwatches when you can trust them to use the devices appropriately. This is different for every kid, of course.

Q: Are adult smartwatches too hard for kids to use?

A: I don’t know, honestly. Kids pick up new technology a lot faster than many adults. But there’s no denying that regular smartwatches are pretty complex and are full of features that kids don’t care about and won’t make use of.

Of course, many children are capable of using a more advanced watch but may lack the responsibility to take care of such a device, this is something to consider.

I’d say that, if you’re set on getting your kid a smartwatch, you’ll be better off with a kid-focused device instead of giving them an old smartwatch meant to be used by adults.

Here are in depth reviews of the 10 best Samsung watches

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 – Best Overall Samsung Watch

Bluetooth Connectivity: Good | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes, high quality | Sizes: 41mm or 45mm  | Band Sizes: 20mm or 22mm | Display: 1.2” or 1.4” 360 x 360 Super AMOLED | Weight: 1.74oz or 1.9oz  | Colors: Mystic Bronze, Mystic Silver or Mystic Black, Mystic Silver | Battery Life: 24-48 hours | Heart Rate Monitor: Yes | Connectivity: Bluetooth, LTE (available in select models), Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n, A-GPS/GLONASS/Beidou 7 | Mobile Payments: Samsung Pay NFC compatibility | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: WPC-based wireless | OS: Tizen OS 5.5 | Processor: Samsung Exynos 9110, Dual-core, 1.15GHz | Onboard Storage: 8GB
Samsung Galaxy Watch 3

First, I figure it’s best to start with a new Samsung watch that has all the bells and whistles. While it’s a little pricier than many of the other Samsung smartwatches on this list, it’s still a great pick for those for whom price isn’t an object due to its functionality and extra features.

Coming in sizes of both 41 and 45 mm, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is the most recent iteration of the Galaxy Watch line. It features tons of great apps and sensors that make it worth the high price tag, including a battery that lasts longer than a day (with the Samsung Galaxy-exclusive feature that allows you to provide power to the smartwatch if you have a matching Galaxy phone), an automatic sleep tracker, fitness tracking for seven different activities, voice call and voice text functionality, and much more.

It’s really the Swiss Army Knife of Samsung watches. You can even pay using the watch through Samsung Pay – no need to bring your wallet to the store or work. Fortunately, the watch is bolstered with multilayered digital security to keep your personal information and banking data safe: a key concern in this day and age.

It’s both iOS and Android smartphone compatible (though again, you get extra features and functionality for pairing this watch with a Samsung phone). But I’d also point out the watch’s excellent durability – it’s water-resistant up to 50 m and comes with a leather strap that’s perfect for form and function. It also comes in three colors: bronze, black, and silver, and you’ll enjoy the minimalist but stylish aesthetic regardless.

The digital screen changes quickly and is well-lit, so you’ll never need to squint at the screen to see what’s being displayed. Ultimately, the downside is that there are plenty of smartwatches on the market that offer a better battery life, whereas the Galaxy Watch 3 can only go up to 56 hours at most. It’s usually shorter than that, too, depending on the features you use.

My advice? This is a great pick if you want a modern, up-to-date smartwatch that has everything Samsung has to offer. But since it’s a bit costly, I’d only recommend it if you’ll actually use all that stuff. Otherwise, more budget-friendly alternatives can give you a similar experience without demanding quite as high a cost.

Pros
  • Comes with all major smartwatch features
  • Can track your heart rate and up to seven different fitness activities
  • Offers a stellar screen with great lighting
  • Call and text connectivity/range is solid
  • Good aesthetic and strap durability, plus waterproof construction
  • Can charge it to some extent if you have a Samsung Galaxy phone
Cons
  • A bit pricey compared to other smartwatches for Samsung users
  • Battery life could be a little better for the price tag

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 – Best Samsung Watch for Fitness

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes | Sizes: 40mm, 44mm | Band Size: 20mm | Display: 1.2”, 1.4” (AMOLED) | Weight: 0.9oz, 1.1oz | Colors: Cloud-Silver, Aqua-Black, Pink-Gold | Battery Life: 24-60 hours | Heart Rate Monitor: Yes | Connectivity  / LTE: LTE, Bluetooth® 5.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n, NFC, A-GPS/GLONASS/Beidou | Mobile Payments / NFC: Yes | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: Wireless | OS: Tizen OS 4.0 | Processor: Exynos 9110 dual core 1.15 GHz | Onboard Storage: 4GB
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2

Want a smartwatch better suited for fitness activities and helping you stick to your fitness goals? The Samsung Galaxy Active 2 is the most recent version of this particular line of Samsung watches, and it’s designed from the ground up to include additional fitness functions and features.

For instance, the Active 2 is built so that it will automatically start tracking your workouts once you set your parameters and train it to recognize when you’ve started to run or lift. This means you won’t have to fiddle with your smartwatch at the beginning of your workout session each time you head to the gym.

What exactly can you track? All the staple exercise activities you would imagine, including running, lifting, swimming, and more. Even better, this watch comes with pace coaching: a special feature you can engage to let the watch coach you through your exercises. This will help prevent you from overexerting yourself or pushing too hard during your workout, as well as help you maintain proper form.

After your workout, the watch can check your heartbeat and track your sleep quality using the built-in monitors at the base of the watch face. This will help you get the best sleep and make sure that you have the energy you need for the following day’s exercise routine.

The watch comes in a simple black color with red hands and details on the watch’s face, so it’s stark and a little masculine in terms of aesthetic. It also comes in a 40 mm size only. But since the design of a fitness-focused watch is less important than for a general-use watch, this may not be much of an issue.

This watch also only operates through Bluetooth connectivity. Again, this goes to show how much the watch’s manufacturers are focused on fitness stuff instead of general use. You won’t be able to receive texts or phone calls using this watch, but that could be a good thing for folks who don’t like to be interrupted in the middle of their workouts.

All in all, it’s a fantastic Samsung fitness watch with a leather band that’s tough and comfortable with plenty of exercise-focused features to keep you busy and motivated. Just be sure that the watch fits your wrist before buying.

Pros
  • Made of leather and stainless steel – both are high-quality materials and the stainless steel will prevent corrosive damage
  • Has lots of fitness-focused features
  • Can effectively and accurately monitor your sleep quality
  • Can automatically start tracking your workouts
  • Includes coaching features to help you exercise at your best
Cons
  • Leather can get a little uncomfortable if you work up a big sweat
  • Limited functionality – only purchase if you want a smartwatch for fitness more than anything else

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active – Best Value Active Samsung Watch

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes | Sizes: 40mm | Band Size: 20mm | Display: 1.1” Circular Super AMOLED (360 x 360) | Weight: 0.88oz | Colors: Black, Silver, Rose Gold, Green | Battery Life: 2 days | Heart Rate Monitor: Yes | Connectivity  / LTE: Bluetooth4.2, Wi-Fi b/g/n, NFC, GPS/Glonass/Beidou/Galileo | Mobile Payments / NFC: Yes | Compatibility: Samsung, Android 5.0, iOS 9.0 | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: Wireless | OS: Tizen OS 4.0 | Processor: Dual-core Exynos 9110 1.15 GHz | Onboard Storage: 4GB
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active

The last Samsung fitness watch was a little pricey, even though its value cannot be denied. But this Samsung watch – the original Active – offers many of the same top-tier features at a much more reasonable price tag. This may make it a better choice if you want something affordable but still valuable.

It’s a little more versatile than its specialized successor, offering phone, email, and calendar functionalities in addition to fitness tracking, sleep tracking, and a heart rate monitor like the Active 2. The original Active’s Samsung activity tracker can automatically detect up to six exercises, but it also has the capability of tracking up to 39 more unique or specialized exercises depending on your fitness goals.

In addition to normal sleep tracking, this Samsung Bluetooth watch can analyze your sleep patterns and help you come up with a schedule that keeps you refreshed and energized at all times. Since it’s a more versatile smartwatch overall, it’s capable of linking with your phone to stream music, keep you connected to your texting or call notifications, and works with both Android and iOS devices.

It’s even a little thinner and lighter than the Active 2, featuring a lightweight rubber wristband. The battery lasts for several days on a single charge and GPS tracking means you can take this watch with you anywhere and keep track of your steps or distance traveled, even in inclement weather. The watch even comes in three different colors rather than regular black, offering additional potential to match it with your workout ensemble.

In my opinion, the original Samsung Active is a better pick if you aren’t interested in a fitness-only watch, but still want something with plenty of fitness tracking features to suit your exercise intentions. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a little more affordable than its subsequent counterpart, either.

Pros
  • Comes with many top fitness tracking features and can track up to 39 exercises
  • Can automatically track a handful of exercises
  • Very lightweight and comfortable during exercise
  • Has a good battery life of over several days
  • Comes in several colors
Cons
  • Doesn’t have a few more advanced fitness apps or features as newer Active models

Samsung Galaxy Fit – Cheapest Fitness Samsung Watch

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: No | Sizes: N/A | Band Size: N/A | Display: 0.95” AMOLED | Weight: 0.81oz | Colors: Black, Silver | Battery Life: 7 days | Heart Rate Monitor: Yes | Connectivity  / LTE: Bluetooth v5.0, LE only | Mobile Payments / NFC: Yes | Compatibility: Samsung, Android 5.0, iOS 10.0 | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: Wireless | OS: FreeRTOS | Processor: MCU Cortex M33F 96MHz + M0 16MHz | Onboard Storage: 4GB
Samsung Galaxy Fit

Not all Samsung watches are super expensive, high-tech gadgets that only six-figure earners can hope to obtain. Check out this cheap Samsung watch that also has a few great fitness features to help exercise enthusiasts who may be on a budget.

The Samsung Galaxy Fit offers automatic fitness tracking right out of the box, allowing you to start collecting fitness data as soon as you start running, cycling, or even walking. It also comes with a pretty, brightly-colored AMOLED display, which is always on and allows you to check out your real-time fitness info with just a glance.

It’s an ultimately durable watch, which is clear to see given the low asking price. It can be taken underwater, so it’s a good watch for swimming enthusiasts, but it also includes passive fitness tracking functions like daily step tracking, calorie burn tracking, caffeine intake, and even sleep monitoring alongside heart rate monitoring.

It’s also compatible with both iOS and Android devices, and it can connect via Bluetooth to your smartphone to keep you plugged into your notifications and phone calls. While it can’t make or receive phone calls by itself, you will be able to set or program quick replies to texts and get key information about your upcoming day, like the weather forecast or other scheduled events.

In a way, I found it to be a great all-in-one smartwatch that offers most of the main features and functions you’d want from these devices with the exception of phone calls. But I can’t be too upset about that given the asking price and its slim profile. This watch unfortunately only comes in black by default, but you may be able to find a few other colors scattered throughout the market if you want something that specifically goes with your workout clothes or aesthetic.

Not a fan of this watch but still on a budget? Check out our best cheap smartwatches which includes brands other than Samsung.

Pros
  • Very lightweight and durable, even for the asking price
  • Comes with a light-sensitive and full-color display
  • Can automatically track several types of exercises
  • Has lots of passive wellness and stat-monitoring features
  • Can easily connect to a smartphone and keep you plugged-in to your notifications, plus allow for quick replies
Cons
  • Doesn’t make or receive phone calls
  • Could be tricky to find colors other than black on the market

Samsung Galaxy Watch – Best Value General-Use Samsung Watch

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes | Sizes: 42mm, 46mm | Band Size: 20mm, 22mm | Display: 1.2”, 1.3” | Weight: 1.72oz, 2.22oz | Colors: Midnight Black, Rose Gold, Silver | Battery Life: 3~4 days | Heart Rate Monitor: Yes | Connectivity  / LTE: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz, Bluetooth v4.2 A2DP,AVRCP,HFP,HSP | Mobile Payments / NFC: Yes | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: Wireless | OS: Tizen 4.0 | Processor: 1.15Ghz Dual-Core ARM Cortex-A53 | Onboard Storage: 4GB
Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch

Let’s hop back to the Samsung Galaxy line with the original Galaxy Watch. It’s still pricier than many other smartwatches on the market, but it’s also much more affordable than its more recent successors. It comes in two sizes and two colors, allowing some degree of aesthetic diversity.

Why choose this over the more recent and contemporary Samsung Galaxy models? In my eyes, you could always pick up a cheaper original Galaxy and get many of the same features and benefits of the newer Samsung Galaxy watches without having to pay quite so much. That’s worthwhile, no?

Let’s break down all that it offers. For one, it has a better battery life than the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3; it lasts for up to several days before needing to recharge. It also comes with a wireless charger out of the box, plus comes with several fitness tracking features like heart rate tracking and sleep monitoring.

There are a few backsteps, though, compared to newer models. For instance, it only connects via Bluetooth rather than LTE, so you will only be able to connect to your android or iOS smartphone using that connection type. It also doesn’t make or receive phone calls.

You should note that this watch’s default digital face is much more complex than typical, minimalist LED screens you can find on modern smartwatches. It’s tough, too, featuring a durable steel case and a rubberized wristband that can be interchanged with other colors or sizes depending on your needs. The GPS tracking is minimal but helpful if you sync the watch to an appropriate app on your smartphone.

All in all, the original Samsung Galaxy Watch is still a decent pick, especially if you prefer smartwatches that don’t have fully digital screens and can intrude on your thoughts so easily.

Pros
  • Offers a cross between digital and analog watches
  • Comes with a battery life of up to a few days on a single charge, and can be charged wirelessly
  • Features a durable metal case and rubber wristband
  • Can connect to iOS and Android devices up to 30 m away
Cons
  • Lacks some of the more modern smartwatch features you might expect
  • Doesn’t make or receive phone calls

Samsung Gear Sport – Best Budget Samsung Fitness Watch

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: No | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes | Sizes: 43mm | Band Size: 20mm | Display: 1.2” 360 x 360 Super AMOLED | Weight: 1.76oz | Colors: Black, Blue | Battery Life: 3-4 days | Heart Rate Monitor: Yes | Connectivity  / LTE: BT4.2, Wi-Fi(802.11 b/g/n), GPS/Glonass, NFC | Mobile Payments / NFC: Yes | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: Wireless | OS: Tizen OS 3.0 | Processor: Exynos 7270, dual-core 1.0GHz| Onboard Storage: 4GB
Samsung Gear Sport

How about a Samsung fitness watch that’s ideal if you’re on a budget? In that case, the Samsung Gear Sport might just be the perfect fitness smartwatch for your needs. It’s not too pricey compared to the other fitness-focused watches I’ve explained so far, though it’s also not the cheapest Samsung watch overall (that’s above).

Instead, think of this as a budget-friendly fitness watch that includes lots of excellent features without totally breaking the bank. It’s swim resistant down to 50 m, so it’s perfect if your preferred form of exercise is aquatic. It also offers all day and passive fitness tracking so you can keep an eye on how many calories you burn and how well your current exercise routine is treating you.

Even better, the watch comes with personal coaching built-in. This can help you stay on top of your fitness routine, maintain better form as you do your exercises, and avoid overstraining yourself. The coach can run for as long as you like, and it’s a really fun and useful function to engage throughout the day.

Everything is depicted on a minimalist and simplistic digital screen. The only downside is the time-telling aspect of the watch is a little too detail-sparse in my eyes (there aren’t any numbers in some setups, for instance). But that’s an ultimately minor downside as the focus of this watch is clearly on exercise and coaching.

But it’s not limited to those types of applications, either. The Gear Sport also comes with Samsung Pay so you can make payments right from your wrist. It can also receive calls and texts from your linked phone. Turn the bezel and you’ll automatically engage that functionality without having to fumble through a bunch of different buttons or screens on the digital interface. That’s a really neat and innovative design I’d like to see elsewhere.

Even better, the Gear Sport comes with Samsung Connect. This allows you to control any compatible smart devices and appliances right from your smartwatch, including your phones, appliances like fridges or alarms, door locks, lights, and even more. Talk about versatility! It can even download music so you can enjoy your favorite playlists as you work out, and it’ll last for several days on a single charge. A wireless charging dock comes with the purchase, to boot.

All in all, there’s a ton of value included with this Samsung smartwatch. It’s far from an over-specialized fitness accessory only suitable for exercise enthusiasts. It’s a great watch overall with some of the best fitness and exercise applications you can find.

Pros
  • Comes with lots of great fitness applications and passive tracking, such as calories, sleep, and your heart rate
  • Can accept calls and texts with good connectivity
  • Can also let you control your other wireless devices through the smartwatch’s interface
  • Very durable and suitable for outdoor or aquatic use
  • Mixes fitness and other smartwatch features effectively
Cons
  • Oddly, the clock is very well detailed and is kind of annoying to use

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro – Best Hybrid Samsung Watch

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: No | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes | Sizes: N/A | Band Size: 24mm | Display: 1.5″ | Weight: 1.2oz | Colors: Black, Red | Battery Life: 3~5 days | Heart Rate Monitor: Yes | Connectivity  / LTE: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz, Bluetooth v4.2 A2DP,AVRCP | Mobile Payments / NFC: No | Compatibility: Samsung, Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: Wireless | OS: Tizen | Processor: Dual Core (1GHz Exynos 3250) | Onboard Storage: 4GB
Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro

But how about a real hybrid Samsung watch that provides you with excellent fitness features and applications, as well as more versatile smartwatch uses? In that case, check out the Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro: an offshoot of the above-mentioned Gear Sports.

This effective smartwatch is just as durable as its predecessor and is water-resistant down the 50 m, as well as dust resistant. But it comes packed with fitness apps that are powered by the Under Armour brand. This translates in practice to typical fitness tracking apps and coaching assistance, but it’s nice to know that each of these apps was developed and vetted by experts.

For instance, Map MyRun allows you to count every mile that you run with ease and accuracy. MyFitnessPal is perfect for helping you track your nutrition and come up with diet plans to give your body the fuel it needs to maximize your workout results. All-day calorie burn and heart rate tracking are also included by default. The watch comes with special notifications or pop-ups to help you adjust your daily lifestyle or activity to better suit your goals.

Connecting the watch to your smartphone is pretty easy since it’s compatible with both Android and iOS devices. Once connected, the smartwatch will allow you to link music directly to the screen, although it works as a standalone music player as well, in case you forgot your phone and didn’t bring it to the gym with you. GPS mapping and text responses to calls and SMS messages are also included – the screen is particularly well-suited, in my opinion, for text messages due to its vertical orientation.

Plus, the watch comes with a long-lasting battery that should run for several days before needing to recharge. A wireless charging dock is included by default.

But there are some downsides here. For instance, many of the above-mentioned apps that provide valuable fitness and exercise data are linked to premium subscriptions. That means you’ll need to pay an additional monthly fee on top of the initial cost of the smartwatch if you want to take advantage of that data or their tracking abilities.

Still, that may not be enough to put you off picking up one of these sleek, effective devices. It weighs just 0.07 pounds and has a particularly modern and techy aesthetic that many will really appreciate, especially in relation to the rest of their exercise outfit. Check it out if you want a versatile, capable smartwatch that does it all without being too pricey, at least initially.

Pros
  • Comes with an excellent aesthetic for general use and for exercise attire
  • Offers some of the best fitness apps in the industry, as they’re developed by Under Armour
  • Can accept and respond to texts and allows you to select premade responses to phone calls
  • Very durable and has a long-lasting battery
  • Offers passive and continuous monitoring applications for fitness goals
  • Works as a separate music player even if it isn’t linked to your phone
Cons
  • Many of the best apps that you can use with this smartwatch require you to pay extra money in the form of subscription fees

Samsung Gear S3 Classic

Many of the above Samsung watches are pretty modern in terms of their aesthetic appearance. But many people prefer smartwatches that come with a more classic look, sometimes only using digital LED screens when necessary and otherwise defaulting to a more traditional watch face.

If that’s something that sounds appealing to you, the Samsung Gear S3 Classic might be perfect. Let’s start with the appearance – the watch is set into a distinctive steel bezel. By rotating the bezel, you’ll be able to control the watch, access your apps, and respond to notifications. It’s an intuitive design that prevents you from having to press a lot of manual buttons or try to press digital buttons on extremely small screens.

It also features an interchangeable wristband that you can customize based on your favorite color, plus a durable watch face that offers military-grade performance. It can resist dust, water, and even drops from significant heights. It does all of this while still looking like a regular watch except when an application alerts you. When this happens, the entire watch face transforms into a digital screen you can use as necessary.

What exactly can this smartwatch do? Almost everything that its more digital-looking counterparts can! It runs on a long-life battery that should last for up to four days on a single charge (and that can be recharged with a wireless charger). It also comes with built-in health tracking apps to help you monitor your heart rate, investigate your fitness goals and progress, and much more.

The watch can receive texts and calls directly from your Bluetooth-connected device. It’s integrated with Samsung Pay, so you can use this watch in place of your wallet. A built-in GPS function will track your activity and make it extremely easy to share your location with others.

Once you connect the watch to your Android or iOS smartphone, you’ll be able to access most of your favorite apps right from the small but customizable watch face. Whenever a notification is received or you want to use the watch in conjunction with your smartphone, the watch face rapidly transforms into a digital screen to let you do what’s needed.

The phone call functionality is particularly crisp, and call quality is high. The only downside is that you’ll need to bring the watch pretty close to your lips to be clear to your conversational partner.

But even that flaw isn’t enough to downgrade this watch by much. It’s a phenomenal example of what smartwatches can offer in terms of aesthetics and practical benefits. Check it out if you want a smartwatch that will look fine with your regular business attire instead of just your gym clothes.

Pros
  • Comes with a transformable watch face that allows you to keep a classic watch look with the practical benefits of a digital smartwatch
  • Has all the major smartwatch features you’d expect
  • The watch face bezel can rotate to let you access your apps, respond to notifications, and more
  • Comes with interchangeable wristbands for customization
  • Has a long-lasting battery and wireless charger
Cons
  • The phone speaker is a bit spotty at a distance

Samsung Galaxy Watch 46mm – Best Samsung Watch for Men

Samsung Galaxy Watch 46mm

I’ve talked a lot about style so far, and for good reason. Many people pick up smartwatches for their cellular functionality and high-tech benefits, plenty also pick watches like these for their original purpose: telling time and aesthetics. We all know that men and women often pick slightly different aesthetics, and that extends to their watch choice.

For that reason, I thought it would be a good idea to pick out a pair of Samsung watches that would be good choices for typical men and women with classically masculine or feminine tastes. Let’s start with this Samsung Galaxy Watch 46 mm: a perfect Samsung smartwatch for men if ever there was one.

For starters, you’ll notice the manly aesthetic in the form of a silver face and rubberized band. It’s both complex and high-tech yet durable looking, so it’ll suit guys that want something that looks like it can withstand a fair amount of punishment before finally breaking down. Furthering this point is the multi-day battery life – charge the watch once and it should last for a few days before needing to be recharged.

The watch face here is extremely stylish and hardly appears digital (even though it is, entirely). You’ll be able to benefit from a wide number of smartwatch features like heart rate tracking, Bluetooth connectivity, smartphone synching, and much more. It’s easy to use this watch to set up a daily schedule – men who are constantly on the go due to busy work schedules will really like this aspect.

But the watch can also suggest different things for you to do if you’re bored or have some free time in your schedule. It’s an especially nice touch for guys who prefer to work out when they don’t have something else taking up space on their calendar.

The watch is also advanced since you’ll be able to connect it to any of your home Internet of things devices. As with another, earlier Samsung watch I checked out (Samsung Gear Sport), this watch allows you to control all your other smart devices like your TV, air conditioner, alarms, lights, and even your refrigerator. There’s a stereotype that dads always want to have total control over everything in the house. With this watch, that dream becomes a reality.

While the masculine aesthetic is dark and gray by default, you’ll also be able to swap out the watch wristbands for different colors if you choose. The only real downside is that the watch can only be connected via Bluetooth tech, not LTE. So make sure that you have this watch synced to your Apple or Android device if you want to take advantage of its full swath of features.

For more masculine style smartwatches, check out our reviews for the best smartwatches for men.

Pros
  • Has a very masculine aesthetic, plus several different colors to choose from
  • Very durable and waterproof, and has a long battery life
  • Comes with an excellent digital watch face that’s big enough to suit all your needs
  • Can be used to control other smart devices, either in your home or in your pocket
  • Has lots of great health tracking features, an excellent calendar, and even a function that suggests activities for you
Cons
  • The watch doesn’t have LTE connectivity and the band, while its color can be changed, isn’t quite classy enough to go with some business attire

Samsung Galaxy Watch 42mm Rose Gold – Best Samsung Watch for Women

Bluetooth Connectivity: Yes | Accepts Calls: Yes | Weatherproof: Yes | GPS: Yes | Sizes: 42mm | Band Size: 20mm | Display: 1.2” | Weight: 1.72oz | Colors: Rose Gold | Battery Life: 3~4 days | Heart Rate Monitor: Yes | Connectivity  / LTE: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz, Bluetooth v4.2 A2DP,AVRCP,HFP,HSP | Mobile Payments / NFC: Yes | Compatibility: Android, iOS | Automatic Workout Tracking: Yes | Sleep Tracking: Yes | Charging: Wireless | OS: Tizen 4.0 | Processor: 1.15Ghz Dual-Core ARM Cortex-A53 | Onboard Storage: 4GB
Samsung Galaxy Watch 42mm Rose Gold

This last high-quality choice is a perfect Samsung smartwatch for women, and not just because of its rose gold aesthetic. The watch face and the band come in rose gold by default, although you’ll be able to choose from different colors just like with the last, masculine Samsung Galaxy Watch. In fact, it’s best to think of this watch as a 42 mm version suitable for smaller and slimmer wrists and including essentially the same collection of features.

You’ll be able to use Bluetooth connectivity to sync the smartwatch to your mobile device, plus benefit from lots of passive fitness tracking functions and applications. Check out your sleep cycle quality, your footsteps, and your calories all from the high-tech digital screen. This screen is a little smaller than the last Samsung Galaxy watch, but that’s a small price to pay considering how well this watch goes with a lot of feminine accessories or styles.

You’ll also be able to benefit from Samsung Pay, which streamlines your transactions without you having to take your credit card or cash from your purse. This watch also benefits from the same durability as its masculine counterpart, featuring waterproofing down to 50 m and an excellent steel watch face.

The same downsides apply as well – this watch is only connectable via Bluetooth technology so you can’t rely on LTE connections for any of its major applications. However, there’s a lot to like here and the plethora of female-focused fitness applications (such as apps that can track your menstrual cycle) mean that it’s totally possible to fine-tune or customize this watch to be even more ideal for feminine users than it is by default.

Definitely consider checking it out if you’re a woman who likes the look and features of the 46 mm Samsung Galaxy watch above, but wants something that’s more suitable for a slimmer wrist size and that comes with a more feminine aesthetic out-of-the-box.

Speaking of feminine aesthetics, if that’s your (or someone in your life) thing then you might like our 10 best smartwatches for women.

Pros
  • Looks perfect for a lot of female fashion styles and accessories, especially since it isn’t as big as the last Samsung watch
  • Comes with all the major features and applications you would expect, including applications for payment, text and call qualifications, and fitness
  • Comes with an interchangeable wristband that you can swap out for another color if you desire
  • Built to last and waterproof down to 50 m
  • Can connect to any other mobile device, including Internet of things devices throughout your home
Cons
  • Only connects via Bluetooth rather than LTE

Methodology

I’ve written extensively about many other types of smartwatches for different users or collections. However, the truth is that many people like to pair their devices together by sticking with a single brand.

For instance, lots of Apple enthusiasts will buy iPhones and then other Apple devices to go along with them. Similarly, lots of people love their Samsung Galaxy phones or Samsung tablets. Since Samsung also makes Galaxy smartwatches and other devices, it makes sense that they might want to stick with that brand both since they appreciate something about it inherently and because certain brands offer extra features for being loyal.

For instance, several of the newest Samsung Galaxy watches can be charged through Samsung phones when their battery levels are low. I decided to check out, with an in-depth research session, exactly what Samsung offered on the smartwatch front, hoping to find the best Samsung watches for a variety of users.

The good news is that it took much less time than I anticipated. Turns out, Samsung watches are pretty popular, both in my office and in general. I don’t own a Samsung watch myself, but I was able to get my hands on all 10 of the above Samsung watches either since someone I directly knew had them and let me play with them or I was able to convince some store employees to let me try some watches on display.

(The latter tactic is a lot easier if you write a bunch of tech articles and promise to keep your review honest – don’t try that if the store employees don’t know you!)

In the end, I came to some foundational conclusions about each watch and was able to distill an ideal use or user for each. Then I wrote this review!

Buyer’s Guide to the Best Samsung Smartwatches

It’s one thing to read my recommendations about the Samsung watches above. But how can you tell whether a great Samsung watch is actually the perfect device to sit on your wrist? Let me break down the top things you should consider when choosing a Samsung watch.

Samsung Watch Specs

Of course, you’ll want to keep the Samsung watch specs in mind. “Specs” in this sense just means specifications – it’s things like the size of the watch, its color, the features and includes, and more.

Of all of these, features are arguably the most important. While the majority of Samsung (and other brands’) smartwatches will share a bunch of different applications or digital features, these can also vary from device to device. Most Samsung watches will include a number of fitness-focused features like:

  • heart rate trackers and monitors
  • sleep trackers
  • fitness apps to help you enjoy a solid workout every time you head to the gym
  • and more

However, Samsung watches also commonly come with Samsung Pay functionality. This is pretty similar to Apple Pay in that it lets you link a credit or debit card or an electronic wallet of some kind and pay for things just by placing your wrist near a POS terminal. It’s pretty handy if you don’t like having to carry your wallet or a card around with you, especially if you’re in fitness clothes that may not have pockets.

More modern Samsung watches (like several in the Samsung Galaxy series) will include LTE or Bluetooth connectivity to let you sync your watch with smartphones and receive notifications, like text messages, or make and receive phone calls through embedded microphones in the watch face. These features are great for those who like to use their smartwatches as replacements for their mobile devices.

All in all, what I’m saying is this: make sure you heavily consider the features a Samsung watch has to offer before finalizing a purchase.

Size

A watch’s size usually describes how wide the watch face is, although you can also find some size measurements for the wristband. Larger watches are usually favored by men, who have thicker wrists than women, who often prefer the reverse. However, larger watches can also be advantageous since they come with bigger digital displays, making it easier to read texts or use apps with your fingers.

Color

Naturally, color matters a great deal as well. Some watches will go well with your current gym or fitness clothes, while others will be a better pick for business attire or general day-to-day shopping depending on their color or aesthetic. Many modern Samsung watches also come with interchangeable wristbands so you can swap out different bands for various colors depending on your mood or outfit.

LTE or Bluetooth?

Here’s a big thing to keep in mind, which is why I include it as one of my top factors to consider in each Samsung watch review. Samsung watches will be able to connect to mobile devices like your phone using either Bluetooth or LTE connections.

Smartwatch Bluetooth

Bluetooth connectivity is pretty standard. It’s what most mobile devices use to sync to each other. But it’s also limited since it means that your smartwatch must be connected to your phone in order to receive notifications, make phone calls, and more.

LTE versions of existing Samsung watches don’t require your watch to actually be connected to a smartphone at all. Instead, the watch uses an existing phone number (you get to specify which), and then can make calls, send and receive texts, and two other wireless tasks without needing to be synced to a smartphone.

This is advantageous since it allows the watch to act more as an independent device. But it also drains the battery a lot quicker and it costs data, which may increase the cost of your monthly cellular plan. Furthermore, LTE Samsung watches are usually more expensive than their Bluetooth counterparts.

It’s important to consider which of these two styles of smartwatch you want to pursue since you usually have to choose one or the other at check out. Furthermore, be advised that some mobile networks, like Verizon, reportedly have trouble recognizing the mobile numbers from LTE Samsung smartwatches. Certain smartwatch customers have reported difficulty getting their LTE watches to work due to some cellular mix up on Verizon’s end.

Bottom line: LTE connectivity lets your watch act as a phone or smart device on its own, but it’s pricier and comes with a few risks. Bluetooth connectivity is cheaper but requires your smartwatch to always be connected to your phone for maximum functionality.

OS Compatibility

The vast majority of Samsung smartwatches work well with both iOS and Android devices. Chances are if you have a Samsung phone, you’ll want to go with the Android version of a given smartwatch to benefit from increased connectivity and better applications. But my advice is to double-check which one you’re buying so you don’t accidentally get an iOS Samsung smartwatch when your phone runs on Android.

Final Verdict

Ultimately, I have a hard time recommending anything other than the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3. Sure, it’s pricey, and most of the time my favorite is usually around the middle of the pack in terms of price and features.

But the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 really brings out the big guns and offers a startling array of excellent features that I think combined to make it a top-tier choice even with its high price tag. This is especially true if you already have a Samsung phone (which I don’t), as you’ll be able to boost its battery life using your Samsung phone if it ever gets low. This is a good thing too, since you’ll recall that my main quibble with the Galaxy Watch 3 is that the battery life could certainly be better for the cost.

But it’s also a great watch in terms of aesthetics. The leather strap, minimalist display (I dislike watches with faces that are too busy and difficult to read), and various sizes make it a prime smartwatch choice for a variety of people. It’s not an over-specialized product like many of the other fitness-focused Samsung watches I found.

Still, many other folks will prefer something more budget-friendly or a watch that includes extra fitness features and exercise trackers to help them bolster their workout routine. My ending advice is this: think carefully about what you want a Samsung watch for and consider whether you need a watch that includes additional features when you pair it with a Samsung phone. Then you’ll be in a great position to pick a Samsung watch for your needs.

FAQs

Q: What is the newest Samsung watch?

A: The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is the newest of Samsung’s flagship smartwatch line. It was just released in August 2020, so people have only had a few months to play around with it. I got my review copy from a friend who loves Samsung tech and was one of the crazy guys who waited in line to get his hands on one, even with COVID-19.

New Samsung watches like this are usually great choices if you have the cash to spare. In my experience, it wasn’t very buggy and didn’t have any big issues that will need to be ironed out with future versions.

Q: Do all Samsung watches come with fitness features?

A: Yes, although the depth and variety of these features can vary. Practically all smartwatches (not just Samsung watches) will come with heart rate and step trackers since it’s trivial for manufacturers to include those requisite sensors at the bottom of the watch face. Only fitness-focused watches will include specialized trackers for certain exercises and digital coaches.

Q: Is LTE or Bluetooth connectivity better?

A: It depends on your needs. LTE connectivity is better if you plan to take your smartwatch out and about without your phone on your person all the time and want to use it to make and receive phone calls and texts all the while. Bluetooth smartwatches are better if you usually have your phone in your pocket.

Q: What’s the big difference between men’s and women’s Samsung watches?

A: There aren’t very many differences in truth aside from size and aesthetics. However, women can personalize their Samsung watches by downloading female-focused fitness apps or health trackers.

Q: Can all Samsung watches be charged by a paired Samsung phone?

A: No. Only more recent Samsung watches, like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, can benefit from this revolutionary and unique feature. Keep in mind that it’s only really meant to be used when your Samsung smartwatch is really low on power, not as a long-term power source.
